Creativity x Structure = The Perfect Combination

Creativity x Structure = The Perfect Combination

Can you combine artistic passion with being organised and structured? Some people think that you can’t, with the stereotype of the disorganised and free-spirited creative still uppermost in people’s minds. Whether you’re a writer, painter, photographer, graphic designer, musician or filmmaker, it’s possible to stay true to your vision while also leaning into the business side of your personality. As a senior project manager, I’ve found myself using many of the tools and techniques that I’ve learned from my day job to help me with my writing, for example: • Identifying and amplifying my work with the correct audiences. • Implementing the S.M.A.R.T. framework to ensure that I stay on track with my creative goal-setting. • Clinically mapping out my social media posting schedule. As a result of this, I’ve realised along the way that 2 things can be true at the same time: 1. I can nurture my creative side. 2. I can set up personal task management methods that help me to maximise my writing output. Combining these 2 things has also given me the confidence to explore other artistic interests beyond writing (watch this space!) • To my fellow creatives: It’s okay to embrace your entrepreneurial side when it comes to monetisation and networking. • To my fellow corporates: It’s okay to step away from the spreadsheets and meetings to investigate what else can spark joy in your life.
